Our worship draws on the Revised Common Lectionary, and the church year unfolds in two movements — each season carrying its own liturgical colour into the decoration of our worship space.

The cross at the front of our worship space was carved from a yellow cedar tree which grew on the slopes of upper Lake Harrison. The tree is an estimated 500 years old, so it was “born” about the time of the Reformation and has witnessed, in a manner of speaking, all of human history since then.
A skilled carver in the Stó:lõ tradition, Don Froese used a hand adze to bite large chips from the upright beam. A carving knife took smaller smooth chips from the cross piece producing the beautiful pattern. If you look closely at the photo, you will see hand and foot prints reverently carved into the cross. Each step of crafting the cross has been a sacred one, done with great respect and care.
We follow the life of Christ through the great seasons of the faith — Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost.
A season to explore more deeply the story of Jesus and the story of the people of God — the long, fruitful green of growth in faith.
Sunday worship at Valley CrossWay follows the liturgical year with Scripture readings as designated in the Revised Common Lectionary.
The second half of the year is “Ordinary Time”—not focused on a particular celebration like Christmas or Easter, but a time to explore more deeply the story of Jesus and the story of the people of God.
The graphic above shows the seasons of the liturgical year in relation to the regular calendar of months, as well as the colours that go with each season (© 2016 Moore and Sprinkle, used with permission). Some of these liturgical colours are represented in the banner photos on the pages of our website. The banner header above shows our worship space in purple for Lent. Below shows our worship space in green for Ordinary Time.
Worship and service go together. Many are involved each week in worship planning, preparing the worship space, reading Scripture, speaking, music, audio-visual, and ushering — woven together by the classical music tradition.
